I'm Khanh Nguyen, FNP-C, and I'm the provider you'll see at XO Medical Spa in both Tustin and Encinitas. Today I want to share something personal: my own hair. Between 2022 and 2026 I went from quietly worrying about thinning to feeling confident about my hair again. It didn't happen overnight, it wasn't magic, and it's still a work in progress, but I've learned a lot that I hope helps you.
Where It Started
In 2022 I noticed what so many of my patients describe: a wider part, more scalp showing under bright lights, more hair in the brush than I remembered. As a clinician I knew hair loss is common and has many possible causes, but knowing that didn't make it feel any less personal. I'd catch myself angling my head in photos. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone, and it's not vanity to care about it.
Starting With a Real Evaluation
The first thing I did was what I now ask every patient to do: get evaluated. Hair thinning can be connected to genetics, hormones, stress, nutrition, thyroid issues, medications, and more. Treating it well starts with understanding why it's happening. Skipping that step is how people waste time and money on things that were never right for them.
What I Did: Daily Medications
After my evaluation, I started a daily routine that included minoxidil and finasteride. I want to be very clear about these: both are prescription-level treatments that require a medical evaluation, and both can have side effects. Minoxidil (oral or topical) and finasteride are not right for everyone, including people who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and some people have health conditions or take medications that make them a poor fit. We talk through the benefits, the risks, and what to watch for before anyone starts, and we follow up along the way.
The biggest lesson for me was patience. Hair grows slowly, and early months can feel like nothing is happening. Consistency mattered more than anything.
Supporting My Scalp With Topicals
Alongside my medications, I added hair and scalp topicals to my routine. For me, this was about caring for the scalp as the "soil" hair grows from: keeping it healthy, comfortable, and part of a daily habit I could actually stick with. Topicals were a supporting player, not the star.
Where I Am Now: Exosome Scalp Serum
Most recently, I've added an exosome scalp serum to my routine. I'm genuinely curious and excited about this area of regenerative aesthetics, and I also want to be honest with you: exosome products are not FDA-approved to treat hair loss, and research is still developing. I don't view them as a cure, and I'd never promise anyone a specific outcome from them. They're one piece of my personal routine, and if you're curious about them, we'll talk openly about what is and isn't known.
What I Want You to Know
Looking back at my photos from 2022 and now, I'm proud of the change. But my results are mine. Everyone's hair, health history, and goals are different, and results vary. There's no single product or protocol that works for everyone, and anyone promising guaranteed regrowth isn't being straight with you.
What I can promise is an honest conversation. Because I've lived this myself, I understand the frustration, the hope, and the patience it takes. I'll never push a treatment you don't need. My goal is to help you understand your options and build a plan that fits your health, your lifestyle, and your comfort level.
What a Hair Restoration Consultation Looks Like
When you come in to see me in Tustin or Encinitas, we'll:
- Talk about your hair history, health history, and what you've already tried
- Look closely at your scalp and pattern of thinning
- Discuss whether lab work or a referral to another specialist makes sense
- Review options, which may include prescription medications (if you're a candidate after evaluation), topicals, and in-office or at-home approaches
- Be upfront about realistic expectations, timelines, and possible side effects
You'll leave with clear information and no pressure.
